Calls for proposals

Hopland REC

The Hopland Research & Extension Center is soliciting proposals for new and continuing research projects for the period July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016.

The center encompasses more than 5,300 acres of oak woodland, grasslands, and chaparral rangeland in southeastern Mendocino County.  The facility provides research opportunities in animal science, range management, wildlife ecology, plant ecology, entomology and epidemiology, pest management, viticulture, and natural resources management. Some unique features of interest include the capacity to study paired watershed effects, grazed and non-grazed vernal pools and a diversity of species, including a new species of wildflower recently discovered and genetically confirmed.

New projects using the center's facilities and lands are encouraged and there may be opportunities to use existing research designs for new research questions. Please refer to http://ucanr.org/sites/hopland/for a complete description of center resources. Examples of HREC's resources include an array of habitat types, almost 700 species of vascular plants including 11 species of oaks, a resident sheep flock, and an array of mammal species including black-tailed deer, wild feral pigs, and coyotes. Facilities include 12 acres of irrigated pasture and vineyard, all-season road access, lab space, high speed Internet, a nationally acclaimed lysimeter, basic wet and dry lab facilities (currently being renovated), capacity to perform necropsies on site and a dormitory that can accommodate over 20 students. For more detailed descriptions of the natural resources and related features of interest, please visit the interactive storybook at HREC Story map.

The center provides an outstanding staff with diverse skills to provide local labor, equipment, research facilities, and technical and management support to UC academics and to personnel from cooperating non-UC organizations. The center expects to award in excess of 1,800 hours of labor at minimal cost to support approved projects during this coming program year.

The Hopland REC assesses a nominal annual project fee to all active projects.

Submit forms electronically via the Universal Review System, (accessed through the UC ANR Portal) by March 20, 2015. Select “HREC Call for Proposals FY 2015–2016” on the “active” list.

For additional information, please visit http://hrec.ucanr.edu or contact superintendent Robert J. Keiffer at (707) 744-1424, Ext. 112 or rjkeiffer@ucanr.edu, or the center business officer Meggin Lewman at (707) 744-1424, Ext. 113 or mdlewman@ucanr.edu.

Desert REC

The Desert Research & Extension Center (DREC) is soliciting proposals for new and continuing research and demonstration projects for the period July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016. Located on 255 acres in the Imperial Valley, DREC's primary research areas are desert agriculture, bio-energy crops, vegetable crops, field crops, alfalfa breeding, livestock environmental and feedlot management, irrigation and drainage management, plant nutrition, pest management and agriculture and wildlife interactions.

The center has five acres of organic ground available for organic research.

The center provides labor, equipment, research facilities, and technical and management support to UC academics and personnel. Approximately 12,500 hours of labor will be awarded to support approved projects.

The center's research advisory committee will evaluate proposed research for scientific merit and regional need. Approved projects will be eligible for center-provided support (land, labor, technical assistance, equipment and facilities). Researchers will be notified of project approval by June 30, 2015.

Submit forms electronically via the Universal Review System (accessed through the UC ANR Portal) by May 8, 2015. Select “Desert REC call for research proposals 2015-2016” on the “active” list.
